Belen Q.

“Volunteering has profoundly changed my worldview and the way I see others. My involvement at CHUM and at the CISSS of Saint-Hyacinthe has allowed me to be in direct contact with many vulnerable patients. There, I provide assistance, a listening ear, and support. For me, presence is important — simply speaking with someone can make a difference. Sometimes we don’t know a person’s past, and the only thing we can truly offer is to listen and walk alongside them during a difficult moment. Leading activities has also given me another perspective: the importance of social connection. My involvement at school, through an engagement committee, has also allowed me to help people in need in different contexts. By organizing activities with my school, I learned that everyone’s life and lived experience is different, and that what matters most is simply being present. Helping is something we offer freely, and I would hope that someone would be there for me if I ever needed support.”
