“When I retired, I began volunteering for the Stratford Perth Museum. I had read an article about the Anne Franke exhibit and wanted to learn more. After an introduction, I was scheduled for tours. During the tours, the visitors had the choice of me directing them to the different areas or telling them about each area. One afternoon, I met a man whose uncle had been the head of the underground in his area of Holland. Another time, two ladies told me about a building they recognized. These experiences made me want to continue helping at the Museum on a regular basis. I have learned so much on my shifts and have met people from around the world. I volunteer whenever they need me and I’m available, making popcorn, greeting guests, working the main desk, even directing traffic in the parking lot. I thoroughly enjoy my volunteer hours there and hope to continue for as long as I am able.”

« À ma retraite, j’ai commencé à faire du bénévolat au Stratford Perth Museum. J’avais lu un article sur l’exposition Anne Frank et je voulais en apprendre davantage. Après une première rencontre, on m’a confié des visites guidées. Pendant ces visites, les visiteurs pouvaient soit me demander de les orienter vers les différentes sections, soit m’écouter leur présenter chaque espace. Un après-midi, j’ai rencontré un homme dont l’oncle avait dirigé la résistance clandestine dans sa région des Pays-Bas. Une autre fois, deux femmes m’ont parlé d’un bâtiment qu’elles avaient reconnu. Ces expériences m’ont donné envie de continuer à m’impliquer régulièrement au musée. Au fil de mes quarts, j’ai beaucoup appris et j’ai rencontré des gens de partout dans le monde. Je fais du bénévolat chaque fois qu’on a besoin de moi et que je suis disponible : je prépare du maïs soufflé, j’accueille les visiteurs, je travaille à l’accueil principal, et je fais même la circulation dans le stationnement. J’apprécie énormément les heures que je consacre au bénévolat là-bas et j’espère pouvoir continuer aussi longtemps que possible. »
